BEFORE - APPLICATION

  • Does the summer school have specific language requirements?

    As the whole program is held in English, proficiency is therefore required. However, no formal proof of competence in English is necessary.
  • Are scholarships available to attend the Summer School?

    Please get in contact with your National Point of Contact to find out if and to what extent your participation in the Summer School Alpbach can be funded.
  • I will have finished my studies once the Summer School 2024 starts. Am I eligible to apply for the Summer School?

    Yes, however, you must be or have been enrolled in a degree program in the year of the summer school, i.e. 2024. Also, you must not have completed your PhD by the beginning of the summer school.
  • Is there an age limit?

    There is no age limit for attending the summer school, however to apply you must be or have been enrolled in a degree program in the year of the summer school, i.e. 2024. Also, you must not have completed your PhD by the beginning of the summer school.
  • I have specific allergies or food requirements. What should I do?

    Please indicate in your application form, what kind of allergies or requirements you have.
  • How much is the application fee? What do these costs include? What further costs do I have to consider?

    To participate in the Summer School Alpbach a registration fee of 950 € will be charged per student. Out of this amount, the European Space Agency provides support of each student, covering 500 € of this fee. Therefore, students are only responsible for covering the remaining amount of 450 €. This fee includes expenses for infrastructure, daily dinners, various social events, and other associated costs. NOT included in the registration fee are: Travel expenses, accommodation (about 65€ per night) and lunches.
  • I am not able to attend for the whole duration of the Summer School. Can I still apply?

    The dates for the school are fixed so participants must attend the whole school without exception.
  • I have submitted my application. When I can expect to be informed whether if have been accepted to the Summer School?

    All applicants will receive a notification in the course of May 2024 if their application has been successful or not.

BEFORE - ACCEPTED

  • I am an (e.g.) Italian National studying at a (e.g.) German university. Should I address the Italian or German National Point of Contact concerning my funding for the Summer School?

    Generally speaking you have to contact the National Point of Contact of the country where you are currently conducting your studies.

BEFORE - PREPARING YOUR TRIP

  • How can I book my accommodation, once I have been accepted?

    Once you have been accepted to the Summer School, you will receive further information on the booking process. There is a pre-reserved contingent of hotels available to you, which you will be able to choose from, once you have been accepted.
  • How do I get to Alpbach?

  • Can I still check in, if I arrive late?

    Yes, that is generally possible, but you have to inform your accommodation beforehand if that is the case.
  • Do I need to bring a laptop with me?

    Yes, you are required to bring a laptop/tablet with you, in order to access course materials and perform work for your mission.

DURING

  • What eating/drinking facilities are available in Alpbach?

    Breakfast is included in all of the offered accommodations in Alpbach. Furthermore, every evening we will have joint dinner at the Hotel Böglerhof (the dinner is included in your registration fee). For lunch and snacks during the day, there is a Supermarket (SPAR), located about a 5 minutes' walk from the Hauptschule, where you will be working.
  • How many hours a day is summer school?

    The exact schedule may vary, but the official daily programme usually starts around 9 am and ends at 6:30 pm, so that everybody is ready in time for our common dinner at the Hotel Böglerhof. Apart from this "official part", however, it is part of the "Alpbach experience" to also let the students discuss themselves how much time and effort they want to put into planning their mission design within their team. So it's also up to you ;)
